Here are some helpful tips and questions to ask when looking for a reputable groomer:

• Your groomer should have an open door policy. Most groomers will tell you that your dog may behave better if you are not present, but if a groomer insists that you leave, take it as a red flag! You should be able to tour the complete grooming facility at any time as well.
• If your dog shows extreme reluctance about returning to a new groomer, pay attention! Some dogs just do not like to go to the groomer, however, whimpering, peeing and excessive trembling may be signs that something is amiss; unfortunately abuse from groomers is more prevalent than people suspect! Signs of possible abuse from a groomer include red eyes, bruising, pained movements and limping.
• How is the groomer’s disposition? How they treat you is a good indication of how they will treat your animal. Do they seem interested in your pet? Are they friendly towards your pet? Does the groomer ask adequate questions or have you fill out a questionnaire to get background information?
• Ask to see your groomer’s credentials. Did they apprentice somewhere or attend grooming school? If they attended school, is their certificate on the premises? Do they have references? Graduating from a Chicago grooming school does not necessarily ensure better service, but it is always good to know your groomer’s background.
• Remember: belonging to a professional or trade organization looks good on paper, but really does nothing to validate or secure an individual’s professionalism. (This goes for any profession!)
